Karen M. Prestwood

Dr. Prestwood is on the faculty at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Her research interest is in osteoporosis and she completed several studies evaluating the effect of low dose estrogen on bone in older women. She is currently completing a 3 year study evaluating the effect of low dose estrogen, compared to placebo, on bone density, cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive function in older women. Dr. Prestwood is also interested in alternative approaches to the management of osteoporosis. She was recently funded to examine the effect of soy protein and isoflavones on bone in older women and, in a separate study, to examine the effect of subtle energy fields on bone in postmenopausal women.

Dr. Prestwood is principal investigator on an intervention development study and leader of the Recruitment Core of the Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center at UCHC. She is the Associate Director for Research at the Center on Aging and the Assistant Program Director of the Geriatrics Fellowship Program. Dr. Prestwood maintains an active clinical practice where she sees primarily older adults with osteoporosis. Dr. Prestwood has received awards from the American Federation for Aging Research, the National Osteoporosis Foundation and the Paul Beeson Physician Faculty Scholar in Aging Research Awards.
