Brenda Penninx, PhD

Dr. Penninx is currently working as professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She is involved in several Dutch and international longitudinal cohort studies. Central themes in her research are risk factors and consequences of depression and anxiety disorders and the interaction of these disorders with physical health. She has published over 300 international scientific articles and book chapters on these subjects.

Dr. Penninx studied Biomedical Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. She obtained her PhD in Epidemiology at the VU University in 1996. Afterwards she stayed in the USA for several years as Visiting Fellow at the National Institute on Aging in Bethesda, MD USA, and as Assistant and Associate Professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, USA.

In 2004 Dr. Penninx returned to the VU University Medical Center in the Netherlands to become the principal investigator of NESDA; the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety. She works for the department of Psychiatry, the EMGO institute of Health and Care Research and the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam of the VU University Medical Center. She is also affiliated to the departments of Psychiatry of the Leiden University Medical Center and the University Medical Center Groningen.
