Valarie King, PhD

Valarie King

Dr. Valarie King is Professor of Sociology, Demography, and Human Development & Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, where she is also Training Director of the Family Demography Training Program and a Research Associate at the Population Research Institute.  Dr. King received her PhD in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.  Prior to joining the faculty at Penn State, she was a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellow at the Carolina Population Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. King’s research is focused on intergenerational relationships across the life course.  During her Brookdale Fellowship she studied grandparent-grandchild relationships, with the aim of understanding what motivates grandparents to become involved in their grandchildren’s lives and what consequences such involvement has for the well-being of family members.  Her recent research has focused on father’s relationships with their children.  She has been examining the role of nonresident fathers in the lives of their children and the consequence of this involvement for child well-being.   Other recent work has examined the role of stepfathers in children’s lives and how children simultaneously relate to both their nonresident biological fathers and their stepfathers.
