Jeffrey H. Silverstein, MD

Dr. Silverstein received a degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University in 1978 and a Masters Degree in Medical Biology from Long Island University in 1979. He completed his medical training at the University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain, and his training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is currently a Professor of Anesthesiology, Surgery and Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Associate Dean for Research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

As a Brookdale National Fellow, Dr. Silverstein studied the underlying mechanisms of the anesthetic response in older adults. The initial work described alterations in the function of the gamma-amino butyric acid receptor complex in a model of aging brain and showed a correlation to altered anesthetic requirements in the elderly. Currently, Dr. Silverstein has advanced those findings to study alterations of the stress response in the elderly and the ability of anesthetics to alter the stress response for clinical benefit during anesthesia and surgery. Dr. Silverstein is currently focused on outcomes from elderly patients undergoing anesthesia and surgery with a specific focus on postoperative cognitive dysfunction and delirium
