Linda M. Burton, PhD

Dr. Burton is the James B. Duke Professor of Sociology at Duke University.  She recently directed the ethnographic component of the Three-City Study, a multi-method longitudinal examination of the impact of welfare reform on poor families in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio and was also principal investigator of a team ethnography (Family Life Project) of rural poverty and family development.  Dr. Burton’s focus on poverty and intergenerational family dynamics is complemented by her longstanding commitment to minority aging research.  Her research efforts both past and present have explored how various contextual and social forces (e.g., community norms, environmental health risks, race) and familial circumstances (e.g., multigeneration household composition, intergenerational caregiving, family co-morbidity) “accelerate” the social development and life course transitions of aging adults.
